More than 6,000 applicants have applied for the 700 available positions in Delta State’s ongoing health sector recruitment drive.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, noted that the number of medical doctors among applicants was relatively low, expressing concern over the development. To address this, the state government has approved a comprehensive welfare package for doctors, including a special tax-free allowance.

The newly introduced “MORE Special Allowance for Doctors” aims to retain existing doctors and attract new professionals, aligning with federal efforts to combat workforce migration. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s initiative is a strategic response to the global “Japa” phenomenon and its negative impact on Nigeria’s healthcare system.

“Governor Oborevwori has approved ₦200,000 tax-free for all doctors in Delta State. This is a major step to retain our workforce and address the Japa challenge,” Dr. Onojaeme said.

He added that with this approval, Delta State is offering one of the most competitive remuneration packages in the country. A doctor at Level-13, with a current monthly salary of ₦370,000, will now earn ₦570,000, significantly improving retention and recruitment prospects.

The welfare package also extends to house officers completing their one-year internship, who will receive a ₦100,000 tax-free allowance, raising their monthly pay from over ₦250,000 to more than ₦350,000.

Dr. Onojaeme expressed optimism that the improved package would reduce industrial disputes within the sector. “Strike actions by doctors will be minimized, as the allowance addresses key demands and reinforces the state’s commitment to a motivated, adequately compensated healthcare workforce,” he said.

On the integrity of the recruitment process, the Commissioner warned applicants against fraudulent practices, emphasizing that the exercise is strictly merit-based and free from financial inducements.

Marking World Health Day 2026, Dr. Onojaeme also encouraged residents to adopt proactive health-seeking behaviors, including routine medical check-ups, highlighting early detection as key to preventing complications and improving overall health outcomes.

President Bola Tinubu is expected to visit Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on November 21 for the APC rally scheduled to hold at Mapo Hall.

The planned event comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the proposed venue attracting public attention.

He added that democracy thrives when political parties have equal opportunities to engage with voters within the confines of the law.

Makinde further explained that access to government-owned facilities is subject to established procedures and regulations designed to ensure proper use, maintenance and public order.

He stated that any political party or organisation that meets the stipulated requirements should not be subjected to discrimination or unfair restrictions when seeking to use such facilities.
