Broadcasters Threaten To Boycott Wike’s Press Briefings Over Okinbaloye Remark.

The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has demanded that FCT Minister Nyesom Wike retract his controversial remark about Channels TV journalist Seun Okinbaloye.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement signed by IBAN Chairman Ahmed Ramalan and Acting General Secretary Fidelis Duker, the body warned that it may boycott all media engagements organised by Wike if he fails to issue a public apology.

The controversy arose after Wike reacted to Okinbaloye’s commentary on the state of Nigeria’s democracy during Politics Today, saying: “If there was any way to break the screen, I would have shot him.” He later clarified that it was not a literal threat, and his aide described the comment as “hyperbolic.”

IBAN, however, stressed that such statements are inappropriate for a public official and could intimidate journalists, worsening Nigeria’s already precarious press freedom situation. The association noted that the country ranks 122 out of 180 on the global press freedom index and that media practitioners face surveillance, attacks, and arbitrary arrests.

The body called on Wike to publicly withdraw the comment, apologise to Okinbaloye and the media, and reaffirm his commitment to press freedom under Sections 22 and 39 of the 1999 Constitution.

“Should the minister fail to act, IBAN will advise all independent broadcast stations to suspend coverage of all press briefings, media chats, and official news conferences hosted by the FCT minister,” the statement read.

IBAN, however, left the door open for constructive engagement, hoping Wike takes corrective action to allow normal media coverage to continue.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.
