‘Fuel Hike Hits Hard: Nigerians Spend 80% Of Income On Transport’.

Published

on

Many Nigerians are struggling under the burden of rising fuel prices, which have sent transportation and living costs soaring nationwide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Salaries remain stagnant while the prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), diesel, kerosene, and cooking gas continue to climb, worsening the daily hardships of citizens.

The fuel hike has had an immediate and widespread effect, driving up transport fares, food prices, and the overall cost of doing business.

In Abuja, petrol now sells for between N1,300 and N1,450 per litre, while diesel approaches N2,000 per litre, reflecting fluctuations in global oil markets. The increase has forced commuters and motorists to spend significantly more on fuel, leaving less money for food and other essentials.

Organised labour and key stakeholders have warned that without proper management, the gains from rising oil revenues could be erased by inflation and economic strain.

Dangote Warns Everyone Will Feel the Impact

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, cautioned that the ongoing tensions in the Middle East between Iran and the United States-Israel could affect everyone if the situation escalates. His 650,000-barrel-per-day refinery raised gantry petrol prices to N1,245 per litre in March, and he stressed that continued instability would push energy costs even higher, impacting small businesses and industries alike.

NLC Calls for Government Intervention

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged urgent government action as petrol prices approach N1,400 per litre across the country, warning of rising inflation, job losses, and business closures. Dangote Petroleum’s multiple price hikes in March, reaching an ex-depot price of N1,275 per litre, have intensified concerns about fuel pricing in Nigeria’s deregulated downstream sector.

Nigerians Speak Out

Many commuters report spending nearly their entire income on fuel. A commercial bus driver in Abuja, Chinedu Ike, said, “I am spending almost all the money I make on fuel. This morning alone, I spent over N50,000 before even leaving.”

An Abuja civil servant, who requested anonymity, added, “We are spending almost our entire salary just on transportation. I spent N1,500 to get to work this morning, despite leaving very early.”

Peter Echo expressed frustration, saying, “Over 80% of my salary now goes to commuting. After transport and feeding my family, there’s almost nothing left. How can we save or plan for the future?”

Anthony Ameh noted that transportation costs have quadrupled for workers commuting from satellite towns around Abuja, including Mararaba, Suleja, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, Masaka, Keffi, and Abaji. He urged all levels of government to act decisively to address the soaring fuel prices, warning that failure to do so would exacerbate poverty, mental health struggles, and economic hardship for Nigerian workers.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has strongly opposed reported moves by the state government to revisit the alleged Offa robbery case involving former Governor Abubakar Bukola Saraki and others.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

reports that the party made its position known during an emergency press conference in Ilorin on Friday, describing the development as politically motivated and unjust.

PDP spokesman, Comrade Olushola Adewara, said the alleged plan to reopen the case amounts to an attempt to politicise a matter that has already been concluded by the courts.

He alleged that the move was targeted at dragging Saraki into a case in which, according to him, legal authorities had previously found no evidence linking him to the incident.

Adewara referenced earlier legal opinions from the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, which reportedly stated that Saraki was not connected to the robbery case.

The party insisted that suspects in the case had already been prosecuted and convicted, with judgments upheld at appellate levels, while the matter is currently before the Supreme Court.

PDP urged Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to focus on governance rather than what it described as attempts to revive old political narratives.

It also called on security agencies to monitor the situation closely, warning that such actions could heighten political tension in the state.

The party further appealed to residents, especially families of victims in Offa, not to allow their pain to be used for political purposes.

reports that Showunmi made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) secretariat in Abeokuta on Friday.

Showunmi argued that political parties may choose or endorse candidates, but insisted such arrangements must not deny voters a genuine electoral choice.

He said: “I will be running for governor in the 2027 governorship election. I have come to plead with you to set up a small committee… to determine how we can collaborate to make this happen.”

He also questioned whether Ogun State would experience a “coronation” or a competitive election process, urging stakeholders to allow open political contest.

The PDP chieftain noted that Ogun West’s long-standing exclusion from producing a governor is a legitimate grievance, but stressed that aspirations must still be tested through competition.

He advocated issue-based campaigns ahead of 2027, rejecting “money politics” and challenging aspirants to public debates on governance.

Showunmi maintained that he has no history of violence or political thuggery, insisting the election should be centred on ideas and development plans for the state.

In response, IPAC leadership and other political actors at the event called for collaboration and careful selection of leaders ahead of the 2027 elections.
