Court Rejects Sowore’s Case Against DSS And Meta Over Facebook Post.
A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a fundamental rights enforcement suit filed by politician and online publisher Omoyele Sowore against the Department of State Services (DSS), its Director-General, and Meta Platforms Incorporated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Justice Mohammed Umar, delivering judgment on Thursday, ruled against Sowore on all counts, finding the suit lacked merit and denying all reliefs sought.
Sowore had filed the suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1887/2025, claiming that Meta, acting on the instructions of the DSS, removed a Facebook post he made on August 26, 2025, and deactivated his account. The post referred to President Bola Tinubu as a “criminal,” stating:
“This criminal actually went to Brazil to state that there is no more corruption in Nigeria. What audacity to lie shamelessly!”
He argued that the actions by Meta and the DSS violated his constitutional rights to a fair hearing, freedom of expression, and freedom of association.
Justice Umar held that Sowore’s claim of a breach of fair hearing was invalid, noting that the right applies only to judicial proceedings before a court or tribunal, not to decisions made by non-judicial bodies like the DSS or Meta.
“To seek to enforce the fundamental right to fair hearing… the alleged violation must be in respect of proceedings before a court or tribunal established by law,” he explained.
On the issue of freedom of expression and association, the court found no violation, emphasizing that constitutional rights are not absolute and can be limited to protect the rights and reputation of others. The judge noted that Meta acted under its own policies and independent judgment following the DSS complaint.
Justice Umar concluded that Sowore failed to demonstrate that his constitutional rights had been violated or were under threat:
“A careful perusal… shows the applicant has failed to convince this court that his rights… have been or are likely to be threatened.”
The court dismissed the suit and awarded N1.5 million in costs against Sowore, split as N500,000 each to the DSS, its Director-General, and Meta Platforms Incorporated.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
