The resignations follow a directive from Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, which instructed all political appointees intending to contest elective offices to resign by March 31, 2026. This includes ministers, advisers, personal assistants, agency CEOs, and other federal appointees, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and INEC’s election timetable.
Officials cited personal political goals as their reason for stepping down. Confirmed resignations include:
- Tanko Sununu – Former Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs, stepping down to pursue a senatorial seat in Kebbi State.
- Yusuf Tuggar – Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, resigning to contest for Bauchi State governorship under the APC.
- Saidu Ahmed Alkali – Former Minister of Transportation, joining the Gombe State governorship race.
- Nasiru Gawuna – Former Kano Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Federal Mortgage Bank board, resigning to pursue elective office in Kano State.
- Abdulrazak Namdas – Former NDDC board member, likely contesting the Adamawa State governorship.
The presidential directive emphasizes fairness and transparency in the electoral process, urging full compliance from all affected officials.
