Aruna Crashes Out Of ITTF World Cup After Matsushima Defeat.
Nigeria’s Quadri Aruna has been eliminated from the ITTF World Cup after a straight-sets defeat to Sora Matsushima in his final Group 6 match at the Galaxy Arena in Macao.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Aruna needed a win to keep his tournament hopes alive following an opening loss, but he was outplayed by the world number eight, who secured a 3-0 victory in just 17 minutes and 35 seconds. The scores read 12-10, 11-3, 11-5, with Matsushima dominating from start to finish, ending any chance for the Nigerian to advance to the knockout stage.
Aruna entered the match under pressure after losing 3-0 to Tomislav Pucar in their first encounter (11-4, 12-10, 11-6). He struggled to find rhythm against Matsushima, unable to mount the response needed.
Matsushima amassed 34 points to Aruna’s 18, including 20 points on his own serve while conceding just seven. Aruna scored only 11 points on serve and seven on return, with a brief five-point streak unable to shift the momentum.
The loss confirms Aruna’s early exit and continues a difficult period on the international stage. The 37-year-old is now winless in his last 10 matches at major competitions, with his last victory coming against Huang Youzheng in September 2025. Across his last 14 matches, he has won only one game.
Recent defeats include losses to Tomokazu Harimoto, Truls Moregardh, Omar Assar, Patrick Franziska, Anders Lind, Simon Gauzy, Ovidiu Ionescu, Liang Jingkun, Zhou Qihao, and Felix Lebrun.
Aruna remains the only African player to reach a World Cup quarter-final, following his 2014 run in Dusseldorf. With Nigeria’s campaign in Macao over, he now shifts focus to the World Team Table Tennis Championships in London later this month.
