“DHQ Breaks Silence On Claims Of Recruiting Terrorists Into Nigerian Military”.

Published

on

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed reports alleging that repentant terrorists and bandits are being recruited into the Nigerian military.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja, the Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor, Brigadier General Yusuf Alli, described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that no such recruitment is taking place.

“We are not recruiting any killers into the army, and we can never do that,” Alli stated.

He also rejected concerns that rehabilitated former insurgents are returning to aid Boko Haram or ISWAP as informants, explaining that such individuals would be at risk of being killed if they attempted to rejoin the groups.

According to him, many of those classified as repentant fighters were either forced into insurgency or escaped when the opportunity arose, making it unlikely for them to return.

Alli stressed that Operation Safe Corridor is strictly a rehabilitation and reintegration initiative, not a recruitment scheme. He added that the Nigerian Army maintains strict enlistment standards that automatically disqualify anyone with a criminal record.

“Anyone with a criminal record cannot be recruited into the military or any security agency,” he said.

He further clarified that Operation Safe Corridor is not a physical camp or a recruitment programme, but a structured approach to managing surrendered insurgents.

Participants are screened through a multi-agency process involving the Ministry of Justice and other bodies, and are classified into low-, medium-, and high-risk categories. Only low-risk individuals—those deemed not to have committed prosecutable offences—are admitted into the programme.

These individuals undergo de-radicalisation, trauma counselling, and vocational training such as tailoring, carpentry, and farming to prepare them for reintegration into society.

Alli emphasized that hardened terrorists are still prosecuted through the criminal justice system, noting that the programme operates on a dual-track approach—prosecution for offenders and rehabilitation for victims.

He reiterated that the goal of Operation Safe Corridor is to prevent a return to violence, not to recruit former insurgents into the military.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”

He also said the couple would enjoy lifelong support, including shared property ownership and periodic welfare checks from church members.

The development follows a similar arrangement recently conducted by the church involving a non-verbal autistic man who was married in a ceremony organised by the ministry.

Nigeria–US Coalition Slams US Lawmaker Over Call To Sack Matawalle.

Published

A coalition of Nigerians in the United States has criticised remarks by US lawmaker Kimberly Daniels calling for the removal of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, describing her position as ill-informed and detached from Nigeria’s security realities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that Daniels made the call in a Facebook post, citing a recent security assessment report which she said raised concerns about Matawalle’s performance and past tenure as governor of Zamfara State. She urged a leadership review within Nigeria’s defence ministry.

In response, the Nigerian-American Coalition for Strategic Stability said the comments risk undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty and misrepresent the complexity of the country’s security challenges.

In a statement signed by its convener, Dr. Maxwell Akarachi, the group argued that insecurity in parts of the country stems from deep-rooted structural issues, cross-border criminal activity, and evolving threats, rather than the actions of a single official.

The coalition said it was concerning that a foreign lawmaker would take such a stance without fully understanding ongoing security efforts, adding that Nigeria has recorded some progress under Matawalle’s watch, including coordinated military operations and improved intelligence sharing.

It also warned against narratives it believes are aimed at weakening public confidence in Nigeria’s defence institutions, stressing that such matters should be addressed through local legal and institutional channels rather than external commentary.

While acknowledging the need for accountability, the group urged that allegations against public officials be handled through due process, not international pressure campaigns.

The coalition further called on international partners to engage Nigeria with accuracy and respect, and urged citizens at home and abroad to support national institutions in the fight against insecurity.
