Sources within the legislature told The Nation that the Appropriation Committees of both the Senate and the House of Representatives are expected to present their reports on the budget during plenary sessions.
The move comes as funding for the extended implementation of the 2024 and 2025 appropriation acts—especially capital projects carried over from previous budgets—is set to end.
According to insiders, the 2026 budget report is likely to be presented after lawmakers reconvene on Monday and may be considered and passed separately by both chambers either on Monday or Tuesday.
Lawmakers are also aiming to complete work on the budget before going on their Easter break later in the week. Sources noted that there is a strong desire to fast-track the budget to allow time for political consultations and re-election campaigns following the release of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable.
One insider said lawmakers are committed to completing the legislative process on the budget within the week.
“I am aware that the Appropriations Committee has been working to ensure that the report of the 2026 Appropriations Bill is ready for presentation this week, in line with the directive of the Senate President,” the source said.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio had previously instructed the Senate Committee on Appropriations to expedite work on the budget before plenary adjourned two weeks ago. He emphasized the need for the committee to have the report ready immediately upon resumption.
“I urge the Committee on Appropriations to expedite work on the 2026 budget and ensure that its report is ready for consideration immediately after resumption. We must not allow avoidable delays to derail the timely passage of this critical national document,” Akpabio said.
Attempts to obtain official confirmation from Senate spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu and House spokesperson Akin Rotimi were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
However, insiders remain confident that the 2026 budget will likely be passed before the Easter break.
