More Lawmakers Set To Dump PDP, NNPP As National Assembly Resumes.
Ahead of the National Assembly’s resumption on March 31, 2026, several members of the House of Representatives elected on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) platforms are reportedly set to defect to other parties.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Sources revealed that the House leadership is expected to announce this fresh wave of defections when lawmakers reconvene, further weakening opposition parties already struggling with internal crises since the 2023 elections.
In Osun State, PDP lawmakers Bamidele Salam, Clement Akanni, Mahruf Adewale, Soji Adetunji, and Mudashiru Alani are expected to join the Accord Party, following Governor Ademola Adeleke’s earlier defection from the PDP.
In the North-East, Bali/Gassol Federal Constituency lawmaker Jaafaru Yakubu (Taraba State) and Mayo Belwa/Ganye/Jada/Toungo Federal Constituency representative Mohammed Bassi (Adamawa State) are preparing to join the All Progressives Congress (APC). One lawmaker, speaking anonymously, cited PDP’s persistent leadership crises since losing power in 2015 as the reason for his exit. He described the APC as “the only healthy party” at the moment.
NNPP is also experiencing defections. Lawmakers Tijjani Mustapha, Muhammed Shehu, Dankawu Idris, and Hassan Hussain have reportedly submitted defection letters to join the APC, pending formal announcement.
Meanwhile, in Lagos, Labour Party lawmaker Seyi Showunmi is preparing to move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Conversely, the APC may lose House Deputy Spokesman Philip Agbese to the Labour Party due to ongoing disputes in Benue State between Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF George Akume.
Following the 2023 elections, APC held 175 House seats—just shy of a simple majority—while PDP had 116, Labour Party 35, and NNPP 19. Smaller parties shared the remaining seats. Subsequent defections, mostly to the APC, have now given the ruling party a two-thirds majority in both chambers, reducing opposition influence in legislative decisions.
