Mass Defections To APC Dangerous, May Reduce Participation In 2027 Elections – Analyst.

Published

on

Political analyst Aminu Rabiu has warned that Nigeria may be gradually drifting toward a one-party dominant system, cautioning that such a trend could undermine democratic institutions and even create conditions conducive to military intervention.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rabiu noted that, despite Nigeria’s status as a constitutional multi-party democracy, recent political developments suggest otherwise.

“Given the current realities and the mass defections we are witnessing, it is clear that the country is moving toward one-party dominance under the APC,” he said, expressing concern over the growing influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

He described this trend as unprecedented in Nigeria’s political history, especially considering the large-scale defections from opposition parties into the APC.

Speaking to Daily Post, Rabiu drew a comparison with the political structure under former military ruler Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, who established a two-party system during his regime. “Even under military rule, two parties existed side by side. So why not under democracy?” he asked.

Rabiu warned that the erosion of opposition strength could weaken governance by reducing checks and balances, which are crucial for transparency and accountability.

He highlighted the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition since losing power in 2015, as weakened by internal crises, leadership disputes, and legal challenges. He recalled that the PDP lost power when former President Muhammadu Buhari defeated Goodluck Jonathan.

The analyst noted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is gradually emerging as a viable opposition platform, attracting politicians from various parties to challenge the APC.

However, he alleged that opposition figures increasingly face pressure from state institutions, citing former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai and former Attorney General Abubakar Malami as examples, claiming actions against them are politically motivated.

Rabiu warned that unchecked dominance by the ruling party could embolden the executive branch, potentially increasing corruption and weakening democratic accountability.

He drew historical parallels, noting that similar concentrations of power contributed to military takeovers in Nigeria’s past. He cited the First Republic, where Northern People’s Congress dominance preceded the January 1966 coup, and the Second Republic, where the National Party of Nigeria allegedly used state power against opposition parties before the 1983 military takeover.

“This kind of political environment can create fertile ground for military intervention,” he said.

Rabiu also highlighted the current concentration of political power, noting that about 30 of Nigeria’s 36 governors now belong to the APC, following a wave of defections.

He warned that this trend could discourage voter participation in future elections. “People may feel that whether they vote or not, the ruling party will still win, which could reduce turnout in 2027,” he said.

The analyst called for urgent measures to protect Nigeria’s democracy, including enhanced civic education, stronger civil society engagement, and support from the international community to uphold democratic standards.

“A weak opposition will further erode accountability and transparency in governance,” he concluded.
