Ayanwale was found guilty of possessing 1.272 kilograms of Cannabis Sativa, 2.1 grams of methamphetamine, and 176 grams of tramadol under charge No: FHC/B/21c/2026, presided over by Honourable Justice B. O. Quadiri on March 24, 2026.

Two other traffickers were also sentenced: Etinosa Bazuaye, 43, received 15 years’ imprisonment (or ₦6 million fine) for possessing 13 grams of cocaine, and Godfrey Osabuohien, 34, received 15 years’ imprisonment (or ₦3 million fine) for 15 kilograms of cannabis. Their convictions were handed down by Honourable Justice Chuka Obiozor on March 24 and 25, respectively.

Upon hearing her sentence, Ayanwale collapsed in court and required immediate medical attention before being stabilized and taken into custody to begin serving her term.

Justice Quadiri highlighted the dangers of drug trafficking, noting its links to violent crimes such as armed robbery and banditry. He stressed that harsher penalties are necessary to deter offenders and protect society from the harmful effects of illicit substances.

Reacting to the convictions, NDLEA Edo State Commander, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, praised the judiciary, describing the ruling as a strong message that Edo State is “hostile territory for drug traffickers.” He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to dismantling drug networks under the leadership of Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (RTD) and urged the public to continue providing information to support enforcement efforts.

“The conviction of Tope Ayanwale demonstrates our determination to eliminate drug trafficking and its associated threats to security and social stability,” Ofoyeju said.
