Memphis Depay could face a suspension of up to six matches after he was seen using his phone on the substitutes’ bench during a Brazilian league game for Corinthians.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The former Manchester United forward was captured on camera during Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Flamengo, with a member of the coaching staff appearing to caution him before he put the device away.

Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) has since charged the Dutch international under Article 258 of the country’s sporting code, which addresses behaviour considered against sporting ethics.

According to reports, the action was deemed a breach of discipline and professionalism, with concerns that such conduct by a high-profile player could encourage similar behaviour, complicate rule enforcement, and allow improper communication during matches.

If found guilty, Depay risks a ban ranging from one to six games.

The striker had been substituted in the 22nd minute due to a thigh issue. Reacting afterward, he explained on social media that he used the phone to communicate with medical staff in the Netherlands. He added that he stepped out to support his teammates despite his injury and expressed frustration with the result.

Depay, who has also been managing a knee problem, was still invited for the Netherlands’ friendlies, though coach Ronald Koeman has cast doubt over his availability.

Corinthians currently sit 11th in the table after eight matches, trailing Flamengo by four points. In the match, Lucas Paquetá gave Flamengo the lead before Yuri Alberto equalised for Corinthians, who failed to capitalize despite playing against 10 men in the second half.

Depay joined Corinthians in September 2024 from Atlético Madrid after previous stints with Olympique Lyonnais and FC Barcelona. He has recorded 20 goals and 15 assists in 77 appearances for the Brazilian side.
