The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has re-arrested a suspected fraudster, Emmanuel Akataka, for allegedly returning to examination scam activities targeting candidates preparing for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

JAMB Registrar, Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this on Thursday in Abuja during a media briefing, expressing concern that the suspect resumed fraudulent operations despite previously being granted bail.

Represented by the Board’s Director of Special Duties, Zainab Hamza, Oloyede revealed that Akataka had earlier been apprehended for offences including conspiracy, impersonation, identity theft, and cyber fraud.

The suspect reportedly operated under the alias “Official Frederick,” using WhatsApp to lure candidates with false promises of boosting their exam scores. Through the scheme, he allegedly defrauded at least 94 candidates by collecting payments for services that did not exist.

Following investigations, affected candidates were invited to defend themselves before a special committee, after which their UTME registrations were cancelled with the approval of the Minister of Education.

Although Akataka was later released on bail in line with legal procedures, JAMB said he quickly resumed his illegal activities. This time, he adopted a new identity, “Sir Frederick,” and allegedly demanded ₦70,000 from candidates, claiming he could prevent their results from being cancelled.

To gain trust, he reportedly told victims he had connections within JAMB. Investigations further showed that he initially used his father’s bank account to receive funds before opening another account under a false name, “Zainab Rafiu,” which he presented as that of a JAMB official.

Oloyede expressed concern that some victims who had previously been scammed fell prey again, describing the development as troubling. He warned candidates to disregard any claims of score upgrades or special assistance, stressing that such offers are fraudulent and could lead to both financial loss and legal consequences.

The registrar reaffirmed JAMB’s commitment to combating examination malpractice in collaboration with security agencies, citing past convictions, including that of Ibrahim Abdulaziz, who was jailed for impersonation.

Speaking after the briefing, Akataka admitted to defrauding several candidates and expressed remorse, blaming financial difficulties and family pressure. He disclosed that he made about ₦1.5 million from over 100 victims after his release on bail.

“I am ashamed of my actions. Nothing can justify what I did. I sincerely apologise,” he said.

JAMB reiterated its resolve to safeguard the integrity of the examination system and ensure that offenders are prosecuted.

During a recent visit to Washington, D.C., Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), argued that the prevalence of election rigging in Nigeria is largely due to voters failing to actively defend their ballots. Obi emphasized that while candidates play a role in the process, credible outcomes ultimately depend on citizens remaining at their polling units to ensure votes are counted transparently. He criticized the “transactional” nature of Nigerian politics, suggesting that many voters prioritize other activities over the essential task of monitoring the electoral process. According to Obi, Nigeria’s primary challenge is poor political leadership, and he urged citizens to take collective ownership of their votes to demand the accountable governance required for the country to succeed.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for increased citizen involvement in protecting electoral integrity. During a recent trip to Washington, D.C., Obi stated that election manipulation persists because voters frequently leave polling stations before the counting process is completed. He argued that:

  • Voters must proactively defend their ballots at polling units to ensure transparency and prevent rigging.

  • Nigeria’s fundamental obstacle is a crisis of political leadership, rather than a lack of natural or human resources.

  • Real change requires Nigerians to move beyond passive participation and take active responsibility for the electoral process.
