How Economic And Financial Crimes Commission Nabbed Contractor Over Fake Transmission Lines.

The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has disclosed how the agency intervened in 2024 to stop a contractor from executing a power project with fake and substandard transmission lines.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Olukoyede made this known on Wednesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), Olusegun Adesayo, to the EFCC headquarters.

According to him, the contractor had already been mobilised by the Ministry of Power before an EFCC investigation uncovered the importation of fake transmission materials.

He explained that the discovery led the commission to formally notify the ministry and recommend that the contractor be blacklisted.

Olukoyede noted that the intervention helped prevent what could have had severe national consequences, stressing that the use of substandard transmission lines could have endangered lives and property across the country.

He added that the EFCC’s action averted a potential disaster and protected critical power infrastructure.

The EFCC boss assured the NEMSA delegation of the commission’s willingness to collaborate in promoting accountability and compliance within the electricity sector.

He emphasized that strict enforcement of regulations would help improve power supply nationwide and ensure that stakeholders operate within the law.

Olukoyede also stated that the EFCC’s mandate goes beyond financial crimes to include acts of economic sabotage, urging NEMSA to strengthen oversight of procurement and contract processes.

He assured the agency of the commission’s capacity to support investigations into procurement fraud and contract irregularities.

Earlier, Adesayo said the visit was aimed at deepening collaboration between both agencies to uphold safety standards in the electricity industry.

He explained that NEMSA is responsible for enforcing technical regulations to ensure the safety, reliability, and quality of electrical materials used across Nigeria.

Adesayo added that the agency is seeking closer cooperation with the EFCC in areas such as intelligence sharing, investigation of substandard materials, procurement abuses, and regulatory enforcement.

The exam, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), will run from April 16 to April 22 in multiple daily sessions.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, urged examination officials to remain highly committed and professional, noting that the success of the exercise depends largely on their dedication.

He gave the charge during a virtual final briefing for technical officers ahead of the examination, where he also praised staff, ad hoc personnel, service providers, and technical advisers for their roles in the successful conduct of the mock exam.

Oloyede said many of the issues recorded during the mock exercise were due to poor assessment of centres by some technical officials.

Reiterating JAMB’s zero-tolerance stance on malpractice, he warned candidates against bringing prohibited items into examination halls.

He also disclosed that biometric verification and real-time monitoring systems have been deployed to protect the integrity of the exercise.

Candidates whose biometrics cannot be verified, he added, will be rescheduled to write the exam at approved centres.

Meanwhile, a NAN correspondent monitoring proceedings at Aduvie International School, Jahi, reported that the first session scheduled for 8:30 a.m. began slightly behind schedule at about 8:40 a.m.
