“‘Rebuild Or Collapse’ – Sowunmi Issues Stark Warning To PDP”.

Published

on

A senior Segun Sowunmi, former presidential spokesperson, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to urgently restructure its internal mechanisms or risk continued erosion of....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Sowunmi issued the warning in an interview with Arise News on Wednesday, following a recent Court of Appeal ruling that consolidated judgments on nine cases arising from the party’s leadership disputes.

He emphasized that court victories alone do not equate to political legitimacy.

“No court can confer legitimacy; it can only interpret the law. If those who win in court believe legal victory makes them politically right, they are delusional. Those who lost must be respected, and the party must return to the drawing board,” Sowunmi said.

He attributed the PDP’s ongoing crisis to internal failings, particularly the neglect of zoning arrangements.

“Precisely. If you don’t do the right thing internally, the court can’t enforce legitimacy for you. We are in trouble; there is a crisis of confidence,” he added.

Commenting on recent defections of some PDP governors, Sowunmi described them as worrying but understandable, citing the perceived ‘pendulum principle’ in power rotation, fear of protracted litigation, and the party’s over-centralized leadership style.

He warned that inaction could weaken the PDP and create opportunities for rival opposition parties, including the ADC. “If the PDP doesn’t act right, parties like the ADC will take over the role of the opposition. We are watching a party that has existed since 1998 bleed to death,” he said.

Regarding calls by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for a national convention, Sowunmi cautioned that poorly managed initiatives could deepen divisions.

“You cannot invite a sane person to a pre-arranged, pre-decided charade. In the PDP, zones and conversations are understood first. If this is just a ‘joke’ played on the field, it’s a disaster waiting to happen,” he said.

Sowunmi also highlighted the importance of Seyi Makinde to the party’s South-West strategy, describing him as the region’s key “poster boy.”

He called for a move away from personality-driven leadership, stressing the need for a collegiate system based on shared ideology and culture rather than the influence of individual officeholders.

“Leadership must become a collegiate system that insists on a specific culture and ideology, rather than creating parties in the image of one man who only has an eight-year maximum,” Sowunmi said.

He also warned that continued disunity among opposition parties could undermine their chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress.

On economic matters, Sowunmi noted the link between crude oil prices and fuel costs, adding, “If the price of crude increases, the price of petrol will too. The President must realize that no one has guaranteed him the next election. The pathway to defeat him is transparent.”

Sanusi said the police received a distress call from Kubwa Market, located in the Bwari Area Council, reporting that a man was shooting into the air.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.

The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.

When Akpan sought the court’s permission to adopt his client’s processes, Justice Abdulmalik informed him that the documents had already been deemed adopted.
