Obidients Reject Justice Salami’s Claim, Say Peter Obi Remains Focused.

Published

The Obidient Movement on Wednesday pushed back against former Court of Appeal President, Justice Ayo Salami, over his recent comments questioning former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s eligibility to contest the 2023 election. The movement reaffirmed that Obi remains focused and undeterred.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The statement, issued in Abuja by the National Coordinator of Obidient Movement Worldwide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, emphasized that all legal matters regarding Obi’s candidacy had long been settled.

“As a movement grounded in truth, justice, and the rule of law, we must set the record straight and prevent this narrative from misleading the public,” Tanko said.

He added, “The highest court has already resolved all issues concerning Peter Obi’s Labour Party membership and candidacy. His qualification was fully litigated, and no court disqualified him on the basis of party membership. Political party membership is an internal matter, and the Labour Party duly accepted Obi and submitted his name to INEC. No external authority can override this.”

Tanko questioned the timing of the renewed criticisms, suggesting attention should instead focus on reforming the judiciary, which Salami himself has previously described as suffering from inadequacy and incompetence.

“It is curious that these comments surface long after the elections and judicial processes concluded. What is the motive behind attempting to rewrite history and cast doubt on a candidacy that inspired millions? Justice Salami himself highlighted flaws in the judiciary. Instead of revisiting a settled issue about Peter Obi, we should concentrate on improving the justice system for all Nigerians,” he stated.

Highlighting Obi’s integrity, Tanko noted his achievements in public service and finance management, pointing out that Obi left N75bn in Anambra State’s coffers as governor and has no criminal record. “Yet, the judge chose to spotlight criminality over credibility. Obi remains a symbol of hope for a New Nigeria. His 2023 candidacy was legal, legitimate, and widely supported,” he said.

The reaction comes after Salami claimed Obi should not have contested under the Labour Party platform and criticized declining judicial standards, citing inadequate legal experience among some judges.

Tanko concluded, “We will not be distracted by retrospective opinions with no legal basis. Our focus remains on building a nation where competence, character, and capacity lead the way.”

Oluyede issued the challenge during a meeting with PDP members from all 177 wards in the state held in Ikere Ekiti on Saturday, saying a debate would give voters a clear comparison of both candidates’ plans.

He highlighted key challenges such as unpaid gratuities, limited access to affordable healthcare, unemployment, poor infrastructure, and weak grassroots economic development.

To address these, he proposed a structured plan to clear pension arrears, an expanded health insurance scheme for vulnerable residents, and stronger support for small and medium-scale businesses through grants, training, and partnerships. He also identified agriculture and agro-processing as major job-creation sectors for youths.

Oluyede said he is ready to be held accountable by the people, stressing that his proposals are practical and measurable.

He also urged party members to remain united following recent internal reconciliation efforts and intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the election.

Other stakeholders described Oluyede’s emergence as providential, urging supporters to stay focused on the campaign.

The debate challenge is expected to add momentum to the early build-up toward the 2026 governorship race in Ekiti State.
