In a statement on Tuesday, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, spokesperson for the Command on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, confirmed that five suspects were arrested following the incident, which occurred Monday evening in the Adeti area of the town.
Ojelabi explained that the Anti-Cultism Unit responded promptly after reports of gunfire. The clash, which began around 7 p.m., involved suspected cult members engaging in a gunfight before security operatives intervened.
“On Monday, there was a cult clash around Adeti area, Ilesa at about 7 p.m., and five people were arrested by the anti-cultism squad,” he said.
Items recovered from the suspects included an axe and criminal charms, suggesting possible ritual elements linked to the cult groups. Initially, the police suspected armed robbery or general criminal activity, but further investigations revealed the suspects’ affiliation with cult organizations.
“At first, we thought they were armed hoodlums, but upon arrest, preliminary investigations showed that they were cultists,” Ojelabi stated.
He added that several other individuals involved in the clash managed to escape and are still being pursued by security operatives.
“Some people fled and we are still looking for them,” he said, assuring residents that efforts are ongoing to restore peace and apprehend all those connected to the incident.
Prior to the police clarification, there were rumors linking the shooting to political thuggery and unverified reports connecting it to the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise in the area.

The Federal Government has provided clarification regarding the Transfer of Sentenced Persons Agreement signed with Ethiopia. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, stated that the agreement is a diplomatic and humanitarian initiative designed to allow Nigerians convicted in Ethiopia to serve the remainder of their sentences in their home country.
-
Clarification on Inmate Numbers: Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu dismissed a viral list claiming there are 136 Nigerian inmates, clarifying that the agreement actually covers 98 prisoners located across two maximum-security facilities, Kaliti and Aba Samuel.
-
Humanitarian Rationale: The transfer aims to address the precarious conditions faced by these inmates, which include poor feeding, health challenges, lack of medical facilities, denial of visitation rights, and language barriers.

Rejection of Ethnic Bias: Addressing claims regarding the origin of the inmates, the Minister debunked allegations that the prisoners are from only one region, emphasizing that the 98 individuals originate from various parts of Nigeria, including the Southeast, Southwest, and South-South.
-
Urgency of Action: The need for the agreement was underscored by the fact that four Nigerian prisoners died while the two nations were finalizing the deal.
