Peter Obi Shouldn’t Have Been Allowed To Contest In 2023 – Ex-Judge.

Published

on

A former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Isa Ayo Salami (retd.), has stated that former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, should not have been allowed to contest the 2023 presidential election under the platform of the Labour Party (LP).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Salami attributed the situation to what he described as lapses in the judiciary, particularly issues related to competence among some judicial officers. He made the remarks in Ilorin, Kwara State, during a courtesy visit by officials of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, who presented him with an award at his residence.

The retired jurist expressed concern over the appointment and promotion of judges without sufficient emphasis on experience and capability.

“There are a few issues within the system. Some judges lack the necessary background and learning required for the role. In the past, appointing individuals without adequate experience would not have happened,” he said.

Speaking on the 2023 election, Salami argued that Obi’s candidacy should have been disqualified based on constitutional provisions.

“For instance, Peter Obi ought not to have been allowed to contest the 2023 presidential election. By the time he lost the PDP primary, the Labour Party had already submitted its list of members to the Independent National Electoral Commission,” he stated.

He questioned how Obi emerged as LP’s candidate, noting that the Constitution does not recognize independent candidacy.

Salami also referenced the case of Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, saying similar concerns were raised regarding his party membership at the time of his election. He noted that although lower courts had reservations, the Supreme Court eventually upheld the outcome.

The former Appeal Court president further criticized the judicial promotion system, arguing that appointments to higher courts are sometimes influenced by zoning rather than merit, leading to less experienced judges being elevated ahead of more qualified colleagues.

Drawing from personal experience, Salami said he had seen instances where judges he recommended were appointed before him due to the absence of vacancies in his zone.

He also expressed appreciation to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism for the recognition, noting that such honours are valued within the judiciary.

Reflecting on his early inspiration, Salami revealed that late nationalist Chief Obafemi Awolowo influenced his decision to study law, particularly during Awolowo’s treason trial, where he chose to defend himself.

“I felt that if I ever found myself in a similar situation, I should be able to defend myself,” he added.

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
