Speaking to a large crowd at a grand reception held at Mahmud Ribadu Square in Yola, Shettima formally received Governor Fintiri into the ruling party on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing the defection as a convergence of purpose focused on national development and democratic consolidation.
In a statement released by the Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said: “You are not strangers to this house. You are partners in a shared mission: to build a nation that works, a democracy that delivers, and a future that rewards the aspirations of our people.”
He emphasized that Fintiri’s entry into the APC highlighted the responsibility of political leaders to make decisions that strengthen democratic institutions, adding that democracy is a “marketplace of choices.” Shettima noted that the growing wave of defections into the APC reflected Nigerians’ preference for a party with vision, structure, and an understanding of governance challenges.
“I am excited to join you in endorsing the progressive politics demonstrated by the APC under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he added.
The Vice President highlighted that the party remains open to new ideas and experience, stating that Fintiri’s inclusion brings fresh thinking and a renewed sense of purpose. He also commended the governor’s achievements in Adamawa State, citing visible improvements in infrastructure and public works as examples of effective governance.
“They speak of leadership that delivers results. For this, Your Excellency, we salute your work ethic,” Shettima said, affirming that the partnership would advance both Adamawa State and the nation.
Earlier, APC National Chairman Prof. Nantawe Yilwatda praised Fintiri’s developmental strides, particularly in road infrastructure, education, and healthcare, saying the governor’s performance stood out nationally.
“Your Excellency, you are too good to be in the opposition. You belong to the progressives… welcome to where you rightly belong,” he remarked.
Deputy Senate President Senator Jibrin Barau described the defection as a bold and strategic move that would integrate Adamawa State into mainstream national politics and enhance collaboration among governors.
The Chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, reaffirmed the APC as the only party with a clear vision under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, declaring, “It is either APC or nothing.” He said Fintiri’s entry would promote development in Adamawa State and strengthen national progress.
Governor Fintiri explained that his decision to join the APC was driven by a desire to align with the Tinubu administration’s policies and programs, which he said were already yielding results.
“Mr. President has done so much and set the country on a recovery path, particularly through microeconomic policies. We have come with strong support to back him and the APC for a victorious 2027 election,” he said. Fintiri pledged to mobilize widespread support across Adamawa State and predicted a landslide APC victory in the next general elections.
He also reiterated his position on power rotation, urging Nigerians to support the continuation of the presidency in the South to complete an eight-year tenure.
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of the APC flag to Governor Fintiri, symbolizing his emergence as the party leader in Adamawa State.
Following the reception, Vice President Shettima visited the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Aliyu Musdafa, reaffirming the Tinubu administration’s commitment to preserving traditional institutions. “You are the custodians of our rich cultural heritage… the last line of contact with the grassroots,” Shettima said.
In response, the Lamido commended President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima for their leadership and dedication to national development.
