Delegates at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall paid tribute with a minute’s silence to former Technical Director and two-time Super Eagles coach Adegboye Onigbinde, ex-Nigeria captain Henry Nwosu, and other departed figures in Nigerian football.

The Congress applauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for continued support of football and sports development, highlighting improved funding, enhanced incentives for national teams, and backing for international engagements.

It also recognised the contributions of National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director-General Bukola Olopade.

Bayelsa State was commended for successfully hosting the gathering, with Governor Douye Diri and Deputy Governor Peter Pere-Tubo Akpe praised for their hospitality and support.

Officials from global football bodies, including FIFA representative Solomon Mudege and Confederation of African Football delegate Nadim Magdy, were present and delivered goodwill messages.

A major outcome of the meeting was the unanimous approval of amendments to the NFF Statutes, Electoral Code, and Standing Orders, as contained in the March 2026 edition.

The Congress also ratified the composition of the NFF Electoral Committee and Electoral Appeals Committee, selecting 12 members—two from each of the six geopolitical zones. The committees are scheduled to be inaugurated in Abuja on Wednesday, where members will elect their chairpersons in line with electoral guidelines.

According to the communiqué, the appointments include representatives from all regions: North Central, North East, North West, South East, South West, and South South, ensuring balanced national representation. Five members will serve on the Electoral Committee with two alternates, while three members will sit on the Electoral Appeals Committee alongside two alternates.

In another key development, global audit firm Ernst & Young was appointed as the federation’s new independent auditor for an initial four-year term after a competitive process involving seven firms. The Congress also appreciated PricewaterhouseCoopers for its nine years of service.

Looking ahead, Lafia in Nasarawa State was approved as the host city for the NFF Elective Congress scheduled for September 26, 2026.

The assembly concluded with a unanimous vote of confidence in the NFF Executive Committee led by President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, reaffirming support for its efforts to advance football development nationwide.

Party Official Responds

In a conversation with Premium Times on Saturday, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi maintained a neutral stance when asked about the potential pairing. “I don’t have that confirmation. I cannot confirm for you at this time,” Abdullahi stated. While he declined to offer details on the ongoing selection process, he assured the public that the party will officially announce a vice-presidential candidate in due course.

Background to the Speculation

The rumors of a North-East/South-South alliance—pairing Atiku (Adamawa) with Amaechi (Rivers)—have gained traction since the conclusion of the ADC presidential primary, where Amaechi finished as the runner-up to Atiku.

Chieftain Urges Caution

The discourse intensified following claims by party stalwart Dele Momodu that Amaechi was uninterested in the deputy role. ADC chieftain Chukwuemeka Eze has since pushed back against these assertions, clarifying that Amaechi’s previous comments only indicated that he had not been formally approached. Eze further warned party members to avoid spreading unsubstantiated claims that could foster unnecessary friction within the ADC.

Prior to his death, a social media video surfaced in which the couple detailed the demands of their captors, which included the release of three detained individuals—Sani, Aminu, and Nasiru—as well as the return of seized livestock. Amina had pleaded with the Katsina State Government and local leaders to meet these conditions to secure their release.

Although the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu, announced the retired general’s passing, he provided no update regarding the widow’s status, fueling ongoing concerns for her safety. While security sources indicate that rescue efforts are continuing, they have not provided a specific timeline.

A bandit kingpin, Kachalla Muhammad, stated in an audio message that he had previously intended to release the widow but reversed his decision due to the heavy deployment of security personnel in the area. Furthermore, the bandit leader expressed frustration over the arrest of individuals linked to his group, warning that these actions have hindered potential dialogue and reiterated his demands for the release of the three detainees and the return of seized cattle.
