2027 Race: Ministers Scramble As Tinubu Refuses Endorsement Lobby.

Published

Tension is rising within the Federal Executive Council (FEC) after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed all political appointees aiming for elective offices to resign by March 31.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The order, issued via the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation under George Akume, has sparked intense political calculations among ministers and senior aides.

Sources told Daily Sun that many appointees, who had hoped for presidential backing before stepping down, are unsettled by the directive. Reports indicate that President Tinubu has deliberately declined private meetings with appointees seeking endorsements for governorship or legislative positions.

A senior APC figure explained: “The President is a veteran of the trenches. He recently told a group he is not a ‘kingmaker of appointees’ but a President for all. His message is simple: If you believe you can lead your state, resign and prove it to the delegates.”

This approach forces aspirants to depend on grassroots support rather than influence from Abuja. The directive also aligns with Section 84(12) of the Electoral Act, which bars political appointees from participating in party primaries unless they resign. With INEC primaries expected by the end of April, any appointee still in office by April 1 risks disqualification.

Several top officials are reportedly preparing to resign and contest in the 2027 elections, including:

  • Adebayo Adelabu — Oyo governorship
  • Bosun Tijani — Ogun governorship (pending confirmation)
  • Saidu Alkali — Gombe governorship
  • Muhammad Ali Pate — Bauchi governorship
  • Yusuf Maitama Tuggar — Bauchi governorship
  • Abubakar Kyari — Borno governorship
  • Bernard Doro — Plateau North senatorial seat

The President’s refusal to endorse candidates has created a dilemma, particularly for those facing entrenched governors or political structures in their states. Several “super ministers” reportedly attempted to secure backing but were rebuffed.

As the March 31 deadline nears, government circles have shifted from confidence to unease, with insiders describing the situation as a “quiet but tense waiting game,” as many appointees weigh the risk of resigning without guaranteed political support.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
