Troost-Ekong Fires At CAF, FIFA, Threatens ‘Courtroom Football’ In Africa.

The 2023 AFCON Most Valuable Player, who led Nigeria to the final, told The Athletic that off-field decisions are increasingly overshadowing play on the pitch.
“African football seems to be the only place where you can play extra time in the courts, and it happens too often. Serious questions need to be asked about changing the outcomes of games this way,” he said.
Troost-Ekong was responding to two major controversies. The first involved CAF stripping Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and awarding it to Morocco after Senegal briefly walked off during the final. CAF’s Appeals Board cited breaches of Articles 82 and 84, awarding a 3-0 victory to Morocco.
The second centered on Nigeria’s protest against DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The Nigeria Football Federation argued that DR Congo fielded ineligible Europe-born players under dual nationality rules. FIFA dismissed the complaint on procedural grounds, citing missed deadlines and unpaid fees, though the NFF plans to challenge the ruling.
Troost-Ekong said both cases reveal deeper structural issues that stronger pre-competition checks could prevent.
“Maybe there needs to be more rigorous checks at the start of the tournament to confirm players’ eligibility and ensure referees can make the right calls. This might seem basic, but it’s necessary to restore players’ confidence,” he noted.
He also urged CAF to include former players in decision-making processes.
“Going forward, we need former players and those who’ve been part of Africa’s most celebrated football moments to guide CAF on improvements. It shouldn’t always be a fight from the outside. Involving experienced players, coaches, and directors can help African football’s governance match the quality and flair we see on the pitch,” he added.

Baggage Guidelines: Commissioner Layode emphasized the importance of following luggage rules to ensure a smooth departure. Each pilgrim is allowed two checked bags of 23kg each and one hand luggage piece up to 8kg. Pilgrims were explicitly warned against packing water or other restricted items.

Call for Cooperation: The Commissioner urged all pilgrims to exercise patience and collaborate with officials throughout the return phase, reassuring them that everything is being managed to ensure a successful airlift.

Commendations: Reflecting on the overall success of the Hajj exercise, Layode expressed his gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat for their essential support. He also recognized the efforts of the Special Adviser on Islamic Matters and 2026 Hajj Ad-hoc Committee Chairman, Ahmad Abdullahi Jebe, alongside the committee members, board staff, and the various Hajj guides and scholars who worked to ensure a seamless experience.
