Soldiers from the 13 Brigade and 245 Battalion, Edor Barracks in Ikom, are currently stationed in the area after unrest broke out between local youths and suspected illegal miners.

The situation reportedly escalated into a confrontation involving the troops, leading to the deaths of two soldiers and four residents, while several others sustained injuries.

The crisis has forced many residents to flee to nearby communities such as Ochon, Iyamoyom, and Alesi since March 11, 2026. Displaced persons have also alleged that they are being denied access to the community, even to recover or bury those killed during the violence.

Confirming the development, Arikpo said he was stopped by soldiers when he attempted to enter the community in his official capacity. He noted that he only managed to gain access when he accompanied a retired senior military officer, Major General Obono Ubi, now serving as Special Adviser to Governor Bassey Otu.

The chairman described the situation as highly tense, stating that troops remain in control of the area while illegal mining activities are reportedly still ongoing.

A youth leader, Theo Abeng, speaking from hiding in Ochon, alleged that he and others were fired upon while trying to return to Odonget to bury the dead, claiming one person was killed during the attempt.

Efforts to get an official response from the Nigerian Army were unsuccessful, as its spokesperson could not be reached. However, the Army had earlier defended its actions, insisting its presence in the community is necessary to restore order.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.
