Ozoro Festival: Peter Obi Slams Nigeria, Says Other Countries Empower Women While We Focus On Trivialities.

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised Nigeria’s development priorities, urging greater investment in women as a driver of national growth.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement posted on X on Saturday titled “Channelling Our Women to Critical Areas of Development,” Obi argued that Nigeria is falling behind other nations that deliberately empower women and harness their economic potential.

“While other nations invest heavily in human capital, we lag behind. Instead of ensuring that women—the backbone of our population—are educated and integrated into leadership and management roles, where they have consistently driven development, we continue to underperform,” Obi said.

He highlighted examples from around the world: in Indonesia, women own over 50% of SMEs, which provide nearly 98% of jobs, while in Bangladesh, women make up about 60% of the workforce in the garment industry—the country’s largest export sector—generating roughly $50 billion annually, far exceeding Nigeria’s yearly earnings from crude oil exports.

Obi referenced disturbing reports from Ozoro in Delta State, where videos allegedly showed women being assaulted and harassed during a local festival. He used this as an example of misplaced priorities, noting that unlike other nations, Nigeria has not adequately empowered its women despite them constituting over half of the population.

He stressed the importance of policies promoting women’s education, leadership inclusion, and economic participation, warning that focus on trivial matters undermines meaningful development.

“Empowering women and integrating them into critical sectors is essential to rebuilding our economy and restoring national pride,” Obi said, calling for a decisive shift in national priorities toward human capital development.

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially adjusted its list of candidates for various elective offices in Kano State to ensure adherence to a pre-election power-sharing agreement with the Kwankwasiyya movement. According to a document signed by Kano State party chairman Hon. Hussaini Isah Mairiga, these updates were implemented to maintain unity and align with the established alliance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Under the agreed-upon “60-40” formula, the Kwankwasiyya bloc was entitled to 60 percent of positions, while the remaining 40 percent were allocated to the NDC structure. Leadership took these corrective measures after determining that the initial distribution of tickets did not accurately reflect this division, a discrepancy that threatened to cause internal instability.

Key adjustments include:

  • Federal Constituency Candidates: The updated list features Barrister Isma’il Idris Sani (Kumbotso), Nasiru Ali Ahmed (Nassarawa), Kabiru Ishaq Sa’id (Kano Municipal), Barrister Dayyabu Jamilu Ibrahim (Doguwa/Tudun Wada), Muhammad Hamisu Abubakar (Dawakin Tofa/Rimin Gado/Tofa), Ibrahim Bashir Bango (Sumaila/Takai), and Abdulmajid Isa Umar Mairigar Fata (Gwale).

  • State House of Assembly: Adjustments were also made to tickets in the Dala, Tarauni, Kumbotso, Ungogo, and Dawakin Kudu constituencies.

Party spokesperson Comrade Ibrahim Waya emphasized that the changes were urgent and necessary to uphold the integrity of the alliance. He stated that the leadership acted swiftly to preserve the agreement between the party and Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, thereby preventing potential crises within the party as they prepare for the upcoming elections.
