“Military Alone Can’t End Insecurity in Nigeria – Buratai”.
A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai (rtd), has cautioned that relying solely on the Nigerian Army to tackle the country’s insecurity is not a complete solution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a recent interview with Channels Television, he emphasized that combating insurgency requires the involvement of all sectors of society.
Buratai noted that while military personnel have remained active in operations across various hotspots, their efforts must be supported by effective governance, economic development, and social programs led by other government agencies and stakeholders.
“Troops are doing their part, but the country is over-relying on the military,” he said, stressing that different agencies and levels of government have specific roles in addressing insecurity.
He recalled that Nigeria’s 2019 National Security Strategy already outlined a comprehensive plan that includes economic, social, and infrastructure-based solutions but questioned whether it has been consistently implemented.
Buratai argued that ending insurgency involves more than combat alone, highlighting that issues like unemployment, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure fuel instability.
He stressed that tackling the root causes of unrest—such as poverty, joblessness, and poor access to basic services—is critical. Specifically, he cited the poor state of roads in conflict zones as a major hindrance to military operations.
“In some cases, an operation that should take two hours can take up to five hours because of bad roads,” he explained, adding that such delays give insurgents opportunities to plant explosives and stage ambushes. Improving infrastructure, particularly road networks, would enhance military efficiency and reduce risks for personnel on the ground.
Buratai also called on state governments to address insecurity at its roots by investing in youth development. He emphasized that creating jobs, offering skills training, and promoting economic empowerment are essential to preventing young people from being drawn into violent activities.
