The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, issued the directive in a statement on Friday in Abuja, following the viral circulation of a video showing alleged sexual assaults at the Alue-Do Festival—also known as the “Festival of Fertility”—held in Ozoro Kingdom, Isoko North Local Government Area.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed deep concern over reports that women were subjected to harassment and assault during the event. She commended the Delta State Police Command for its swift response and called for a comprehensive investigation.
She urged “a transparent, thorough, and accelerated probe to ensure that all persons implicated are identified and brought to justice without delay.”
Describing the alleged acts as disturbing and unacceptable, the minister emphasized that no cultural or traditional practice can justify sexual violence. She stressed that sexual assault is a serious criminal offence, and perpetrators must be held fully accountable under the law.
The minister highlighted that Nigeria’s Constitution and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act provide legal protections against such offences. She reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding women and girls, pledging collaboration with the Delta State Ministry of Women Affairs to support victims with psychosocial care, medical attention, and legal assistance.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim also announced plans to engage traditional rulers and community leaders to address harmful practices and prevent recurrence. She urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure justice is served, noting that collective action is key to preventing future incidents.
