The Presidency on Friday refuted claims that Nigeria had agreed to accept foreign nationals under a new migration deal with the United Kingdom, stressing that the agreement only concerns Nigerian citizens living illegally in the UK.

Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, clarified via that the pact, signed during President Bola Tinubu’s recent UK visit, does not obligate Nigeria to take back non-Nigerians.

“For clarity, the agreement only applies to Nigerians without legal residency in the UK. Nigeria is not accepting foreign nationals,” Ajayi stated.

The deal, executed by Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo for Nigeria and UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood for Britain, focuses on the safe and humane return of Nigerian citizens, ensuring compliance with local laws and international standards. Returnees will also have the opportunity to reapply for UK entry if they meet immigration requirements.

The Ministry of Interior emphasized that the framework guarantees secure travel documents, thorough identity verification, and protections for vulnerable groups, including victims of human trafficking. It also facilitates enhanced cooperation between Nigeria and the UK on migration, border security, and capacity-building initiatives.

Ajayi noted that the clarification was necessary to counter “misleading narratives” suggesting a broader deportation arrangement, reaffirming that the government is safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereignty while managing migration lawfully.
