At least seven ministers and several political appointees are expected to resign from the Federal Government following a directive from President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The order requires all political appointees seeking elective offices to step down by March 31, 2026. Issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the directive aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to the electoral schedule, party primaries will hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026, while candidate submissions are due by July 11 for presidential and National Assembly elections, and August 8 for governorship and state assembly polls.

The circular, signed by SGF George Akume and issued through Permanent Secretary Ibrahim Kana, applies to ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, heads of agencies, and other presidential appointees. “All affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters… not later than March 31, 2026,” it stated.

President Tinubu explained that the directive ensures compliance with electoral laws and promotes a level playing field for all aspirants.

Ministers Eyeing Governorship Seats

Investigations reveal several cabinet members are positioning for key elective offices, particularly governorships.

  • Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, is seen as a leading contender for the Oyo State governorship. “I have been on this journey for a while… But 2027 is my time. It’s Adelabu time,” he said.

  • Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, is consulting stakeholders about a possible bid for the Ogun governorship.

  • Saidu Alkali, Minister of Transportation, is reportedly preparing for Gombe State’s top job.

  • In Bauchi, Muhammad Ali Pate (Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare) and Yusuf Tuggar (Minister of Foreign Affairs) are both linked to the governorship race.

Top presidential aides are also considering political moves. Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Principal Private Secretary to the President, is a potential Lagos governorship candidate, while other agency heads and senior aides are preparing to resign in line with the directive.

Legislative Seats in Focus

Some appointees are targeting Senate and House positions:

  • Dr Bernard Doro, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, is eyeing Plateau North Senate seat.

  • In Kano, Hafizu Ibrahim Kawu (National Pension Commission) and Nasir Ja’oji (presidential aide) are interested in the Tarauni federal constituency.

  • Jabiru Tsauri (AUDA-NEPAD) may contest a Katsina senatorial seat.

  • In Borno, Abubakar Kyari, Minister of Agriculture, is being tipped as a potential successor to Governor Babagana Zulum.

  • In Benue, Dr Mathias Byuan (Federal Housing Authority) and Pius Akutah (Nigerian Shippers Council) have declared interest in the governorship.

Other emerging gubernatorial contenders include Lanre Issa-Onilu (National Orientation Agency) and Abubakar Suleiman (NILDS) in Kwara, Ahmed Galadima Aminu (PTDF) in Adamawa, and Dr Usman Tunga in Kebbi, who resigned as rector of Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic to pursue a House of Representatives seat.

Cross River Governor Bassey Otu defended a similar directive in his state, saying it is not punitive but aligns with global best practices to ensure fairness and prioritizes governance over personal ambition.

With the March 31 deadline approaching, attention is now on which ministers and appointees will step down, signaling the start of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and likely reshaping the Federal Executive Council.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
