Sokoto Marks Eid Al-Fitr Thursday Despite Cleric Defying Sultan’s Order.
A Sokoto-based Islamic scholar, Sheikh Musa Lukuwa, led his followers in Eid al-Fitr prayers on Thursday, defying the directive of the Sultan of Sokoto, Saad Abubakar, who had declared Friday as the official day for Sallah.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Lukuwa conducted the two-unit Eid prayer at his Mabera mosque around 9:10 a.m., attracting a large number of supporters who shared his position.
The move came after the Sultan announced that the Shawwal crescent moon had not been sighted anywhere in Nigeria, officially fixing Friday for Eid celebrations. Lukuwa, however, rejected this ruling, citing reports of moon sightings in neighbouring Niger Republic.
In a message later shared on social media, the cleric explained that he relied on verified information from trusted contacts across the border. “Niger Republic is very close to us—about 100 kilometres away. If we accept reports from cities like Kano or Lagos, which are farther, there is no reason to reject confirmed sightings from a neighbouring country,” he said.
Lukuwa stressed that his decision was based on religious obligation rather than a challenge to the Sultan’s authority. “We usually follow the Sultan’s directive in starting and ending Ramadan. However, when it is clear that the moon has been sighted, we must act according to the teachings of the Prophet, even if it differs from the Sultan’s declaration,” he stated.
He also referenced the historical role of the late Abubakar Mahmoud Gummi, noting that moon sightings were once announced by individual scholars before the responsibility was centralised under the Sultan to promote unity among Muslims. Lukuwa insisted that the Sultan’s decision in this instance was incorrect and declared that his followers would not comply.
Sources disclosed that Lukuwa had informed his congregants around midnight about the reported moon sighting in Niger Republic and instructed them to return for Eid prayers the following morning.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
