“Tinubu’s UK Visit: SERAP Urges King Charles To Tackle Nigeria On Human Rights!”.
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged King Charles III to use President Bola Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to the United Kingdom as an opportunity to address concerns over human rights violations and the shrinking civic space in Nigeria. According to reports, Tinubu’s visit is expected to focus on strengthening diplomatic, economic, and security ties between Nigeria and the UK, as well as reinforcing relationships within the Commonwealth.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a letter dated March 18, 2026, and signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation called on the British monarch to advocate for respect for the rule of law and the protection of fundamental rights in Nigeria. SERAP described the visit as a timely moment to prioritise human rights, accountability, and democratic principles in bilateral and Commonwealth engagements.
The organisation raised concerns about the increasing use of restrictive laws and legal actions to intimidate journalists, activists, and critics, noting that the continued application of the Cybercrimes Act and criminal defamation laws against peaceful expression contradicts Nigeria’s international human rights obligations.
SERAP also drew attention to the conditions of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in northern states such as Benue, Borno, and Plateau, stating that many are deprived of basic rights, including freedom of movement, access to healthcare, and legal protections. It stressed that thousands of displaced Nigerians continue to face significant challenges and are often excluded from decisions affecting their welfare and future.
Emphasising Nigeria’s obligations as a member of the Commonwealth, SERAP stated that the country must uphold values outlined in the Commonwealth Charter, including human rights, democracy, and the rule of law. The organisation urged King Charles III to use his influence to encourage reforms, noting that the credibility of the Commonwealth depends on the commitment of its members to these shared principles.
The group further insisted that Tinubu’s visit should not overlook the voices of Nigerians advocating for justice and accountability. It cited cases involving activist Omoyele Sowore, investigative journalist Daniel Ojukwu, and lawyer Dele Farotimi as examples of increasing pressure on civic space.
SERAP called on the Nigerian government to restore the rights of displaced persons, ensure dignity and protection for all citizens, allow independent monitoring of IDP camps, and establish inclusive processes for resettlement decisions. It also urged authorities to end arbitrary detentions, release individuals held for exercising freedom of expression, reform restrictive laws, and halt harassment and legal actions targeting journalists, activists, and civil society groups.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
