According to the agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the Federal High Court in Lagos imposed fines and restitution totaling $6 million, in addition to an extra N1.1 million penalty on the convicted sailors and vessel. Babafemi noted that the vessel and crew were apprehended on November 16, 2025, after NDLEA operatives intercepted the cocaine shipment concealed aboard the ship, which had departed from Santos, Brazil.
The agency filed a four-count charge against the defendants before the Federal High Court under suit number FHC/L/1232C/25, with prosecution led by the Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Theresa Asuquo. The defendants pleaded guilty and reached a plea bargain with the prosecution.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ayokunle Faji convicted the vessel under Section 25 of the NDLEA Act, imposing a N100,000 fine and $5.35 million restitution to the federal government. Three principal officers of the vessel were each fined N100,000 and $100,000 in restitution, while the remaining seven crew members were fined N100,000 each and ordered to pay $50,000 apiece. In total, fines and restitution amounted to $6 million and N1.1 million.
NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Mohamed Buba Marwa, described the conviction as a major milestone in the agency’s campaign against drug trafficking. He emphasized that the substantial financial penalties would serve as a deterrent to international drug syndicates and praised the Apapa Strategic Command, the Directorate of Prosecution, and the judiciary for ensuring a swift and effective trial.
Marwa stated that the agency will continue to dismantle drug supply chains and target the financial networks sustaining illicit trafficking, underscoring the importance of intelligence gathering and operational readiness in protecting national security and the welfare of Nigerian youth.
