According to Nivo News, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has refuted claims that it approached the court to obtain a fresh order to prolong the detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The clarification was issued on Tuesday, March 18, 2026, by the commission’s spokesperson, John Odey, who explained that the agency’s court appearance on March 17 was in response to an application filed by El-Rufai. The application, submitted on March 6, sought to vacate an earlier remand order granted on March 5.

The commission disclosed that during the court proceedings, its legal response was served on El-Rufai’s counsel, who subsequently requested additional time to review the documents. This development prompted the magistrate to adjourn the matter until March 31, 2026, to allow the defence team prepare its response.

ICPC maintained that El-Rufai’s continued detention is based on a valid court order. It explained that the court initially approved a 14-day remand to enable investigations into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. Upon expiration, the commission secured another 14-day extension on March 5.

The agency further revealed that a previous attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to overturn an earlier remand order issued on February 19 was dismissed by the court on March 9. It stressed that all actions taken have followed due legal process and are in line with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

El-Rufai has remained in ICPC custody since February 19, 2026, after returning to Nigeria from Cairo on February 12 and honouring an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16. Although he was initially granted administrative bail by the EFCC, he was subsequently taken into custody by the ICPC on the same day.

In a related development, the Department of State Services has also instituted legal action against the former governor over allegations of unlawfully monitoring the phone line of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
