In Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, had earlier initiated the nationwide search for the Shawwal crescent, signaling preparations to mark the end of Ramadan 1447AH and the commencement of Eid celebrations. The Sultan, who also serves as President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, issued the directive through a statement released by the Sultanate Council, Sokoto.

The statement, signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sambo Wali Junaidu, designated Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH, as the official day for the nationwide moon sighting. Muslims were urged to observe the new crescent and report any confirmed sightings promptly.

Reports of sightings are to be submitted to local district or village heads, who will forward the information to the Sultan for verification and official declaration. The Sultanate Council also provided dedicated telephone lines to facilitate the prompt communication of verified observations.

He also approved an amendment extending the lifespan of the 2025 budget from March 31 to June 30, 2026, to ensure completion of ongoing capital projects nationwide.

Under the 2026 fiscal plan, ₦4.799 trillion is set aside for statutory transfers, ₦15.8 trillion for debt servicing, ₦15.4 trillion for recurrent spending, while ₦32.2 trillion goes to capital projects—about half of the total budget.

The focus, according to the administration, is on infrastructure development, security, and growth-driven investments aimed at improving living standards.
