“Maiduguri Explosions: Latest Reports Just In”.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that at least 23 people were killed and 146 others injured following multiple explosions in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday night. The Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, Surajo Abdullahi, disclosed that a total of 169 victims were evacuated to various hospitals in the city, with 108 receiving treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, 20 at Umaru Shehu Hospital, and 17 at Maiduguri Specialist Hospital. Emergency responders and security personnel worked through the night to evacuate victims and secure affected areas.
Residents, many of whom have endured years of insurgency-related violence, expressed shock at the latest attacks, describing the explosions as a painful reminder of the city’s past insecurity. One resident noted that the blasts signaled a significant resurgence of violence in a city that had experienced relative calm in recent years.
Authorities reported that the Borno State Police Command deployed its Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to the sites for assessment and clearance, while joint security operatives continue to manage the situation. Police urged residents to remain calm but vigilant as investigations proceed.
The explosions followed a suspected insurgent attack on a military location at Ajilari, on the outskirts of Maiduguri, occurring less than 24 hours earlier. Officials warned that more updates would be provided as investigations continue and additional details about the attacks emerge.
