The footage, which quickly spread on social media, showed a group of male students assaulting a fellow student who was lying on the ground. The victim was beaten and kicked while another student recorded the incident on a phone, prompting widespread public concern.

In response, the school confirmed that the students implicated in the attack had been expelled.

In a statement released on Sunday and signed by Tim Asoro on behalf of the Asoro family, the parents described their shock and deep embarrassment after watching the video of their child’s involvement. They admitted that the behaviour was unacceptable and expressed shame that their son participated in an act that caused fear and distress to another student.

The family apologised to the victim and his relatives, stating that no child should endure such treatment. While medical checks confirmed that the victim did not sustain physical injuries, the parents acknowledged the emotional impact the incident could have caused.

According to the statement, the family has held serious discussions with their son about the incident. They said he has shown remorse and understands that his actions affected not only the victim but also the school and the family. The parents emphasised that they were not defending his actions and reiterated that the behaviour was wrong.

They confirmed that steps are being taken to guide their son, including counselling and mentorship, to ensure he takes responsibility and learns from the incident. The family also expressed support for the school’s disciplinary measures and reiterated their apology to the victim, his family, and the wider school community.

The parents concluded by expressing hope that all those affected by the incident would heal and move forward, while underscoring their commitment to helping their son grow into a responsible individual.

Earlier, the Edo State Police Command requested that the school present the students involved to facilitate investigation, warning that those responsible could face legal action.

The case has renewed attention on the issue of bullying in Nigerian secondary schools. In 2024, a similar incident at Lead British International School in Gwarinpa, Abuja, sparked nationwide outrage when a video showed a female student, Namtira Bwala, being repeatedly slapped by her peers.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
