“Tinubu’s Envoy Challenges UK Over Christian Persecution”.
A senior aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised the United Kingdom for what he described as its silence amid recent global debates on alleged religious persecution in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The comments came from Sunday Dare in an opinion piece published ahead of Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to the UK—the first by a Nigerian president in 37 years.
In the article, Dare suggested that Britain has sometimes appeared distant when controversial narratives about Nigeria emerged in international discussions.
“For too long, London has at times seemed a detached observer when contentious narratives about Nigeria surface in global discourse—despite having perhaps the deepest institutional understanding of the country among Western partners,” he wrote.
Dare argued that the UK could have played a moderating role in recent debates regarding allegations of religious persecution, helping to calm tensions rather than allowing speculation to shape global perception.
“Moments such as the recent international debate around allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria illustrate how a measured and informed voice from the United Kingdom could have helped ease tensions at the time,” he added.
President Tinubu is expected to arrive in London this week for the state visit. During the trip, he and his wife, Oluremi Tinubu, will attend a state banquet hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle. Tinubu is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street.
Ahead of the visit, some British lawmakers reportedly urged Prime Minister Starmer to raise concerns with Tinubu regarding attacks on Christians in Nigeria. Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Freedom of Religion or Belief called on the UK government to press Nigeria on religious freedom and human rights issues.
The group’s chairman, Jim Shannon, said Nigeria must take concrete steps to stop the killing of Christians and ensure perpetrators are brought to justice. Lawmakers also highlighted the case of Leah Sharibu, kidnapped by Boko Haram in 2018 and reportedly still in captivity after refusing to renounce her Christian faith.
Dare Calls for Diplomatic Reset
Despite the criticism, Dare urged a renewed diplomatic relationship between Nigeria and the UK.
“A renewed partnership should therefore mean more than trade statistics and ceremonial visits,” he wrote, describing the upcoming trip as one of the most significant diplomatic engagements of Tinubu’s presidency.
“This is the first time a Nigerian leader will make a state visit to the UK in nearly four decades,” he added. Discussions during the trip are expected to focus on investment, security cooperation, technology partnerships, and engagement with the Nigerian diaspora.
Dare also noted that bilateral trade between Nigeria and the UK currently stands at roughly £8 billion.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
