Tension Rises In Kano As Yusuf Merges Higher Education Ministry With Education.

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has abolished the Ministry of Higher Education, which had been supervised by the Deputy Governor, Aminu Gwarzo, and merged it with the Ministry of Education as part of a restructuring of the state’s education administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the decision was announced on Sunday in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa.

The statement explained that following the restructuring, a Directorate of Higher Education has been created within the Ministry of Education to oversee the management of tertiary institutions across the state.

Under the new arrangement, the unified structure will operate as the Ministry of Education, while the newly established Directorate of Higher Education will be led by a Permanent Secretary responsible for coordinating the affairs of higher institutions in Kano State.

It was further disclosed that agencies previously under the now-defunct Ministry of Higher Education, including the state scholarship board, will henceforth operate under the supervision of the restructured ministry.

Governor Yusuf stated that the move forms part of broader reforms aimed at streamlining administrative responsibilities, eliminating duplication of functions, and reducing the cost of governance.

He noted that the restructuring is intended to improve efficiency, strengthen accountability, and enhance the overall management of education in the state.

The development comes at a time of heightened political tension in Kano following allegations of money laundering raised against the deputy governor by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The political climate in the state has also been unsettled by Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a decision that has triggered fresh political alignments within the state.

Reports indicate that the deputy governor and five commissioners declined to follow the governor into the APC and instead reaffirmed their loyalty to the national leader of the NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The commissioners said to have stepped down from their positions include Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development; Ibrahim Umar, Commissioner for Internal Security and Special Services; Nasiru Sule Garo, Commissioner for Special Duties; Abdullahi Sani Makoda, Commissioner for Higher Education; and Lamin Sani Zawiya, Commissioner for Religious Affairs.

Meanwhile, the political tension escalated further last Thursday when the Kano State House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against the deputy governor.

The impeachment notice was presented by the Majority Leader of the House, Lawan Dala, and read during plenary by the Speaker, Ismail Falgore.

Lawmakers said the move was based on allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.

According to the Majority Leader, the alleged misuse of official authority to grant undue advantage constitutes an abuse of power and contradicts the responsibilities attached to public office.

The lawmakers also accused the deputy governor of financial misconduct and abuse of office during his tenure as commissioner for local government.

A total of 38 members of the House endorsed the impeachment notice, after which the Speaker directed that the deputy governor be formally served in accordance with constitutional provisions.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
