FIFA Sanctions Nigeria, DR Congo Over Crowd Incidents In 2026 World Cup Play-Off.
Four months after the dramatic 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off final between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and DR Congo, the global football governing body has sanctioned both federations for disciplinary breaches during the match.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
DR Congo defeated Nigeria 4-3 on penalties in Morocco on November 16, 2025, advancing to the intercontinental play-offs following a tense game that ended level in regulation time.
In its latest disciplinary report for World Cup qualifiers, FIFA stated that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the DR Congo Football Federation were found guilty of separate offences related to supporter behaviour during the fixture.
Nigeria was fined 1,000 Swiss francs for failing to maintain order and security, after spectators reportedly threw objects onto the pitch. The offence falls under Article 17 and Article 17.2.b of the FIFA Disciplinary Code.
The Congolese federation received a heavier penalty, with FIFA noting that their supporters used laser pointers or similar electronic devices during the match—an infringement of Article 17.2.d. DR Congo was fined 5,000 Swiss francs.
The controversial encounter has continued to spark discussion since DR Congo eliminated the Super Eagles from the qualifying race. Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, added to the debate after the match by accusing DR Congo officials of using voodoo during the play-off.
The disciplinary measures come ahead of FIFA’s expected decision on a protest filed by the NFF concerning the alleged use of ineligible players by DR Congo during the qualifiers. Nigeria submitted the petition on December 15, 2025, requesting FIFA investigate nationality switches involving several overseas-born players, including Lionel Mpasi, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe, Arthur Masuaku, and Cédric Bakambu.
Meanwhile, as DR Congo prepare for the intercontinental play-offs, the team has dropped two of the disputed players, Michel-Ange Balikwisha and Mario Stroeykens, from its latest 26-man squad.
