“Tinubu’s Ally Fires Back At Peter Obi Over Fuel Price Comments”.
The Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, has criticised the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his comments on rising fuel prices in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a post on on Saturday, Olusegun described Obi’s remarks as misleading and urged the former Anambra State governor to refrain from commenting on issues he does not fully understand.
The presidential aide was responding to a statement Obi issued on Thursday, in which he blamed Nigeria’s vulnerability to global oil price shocks on the absence of a strategic petroleum reserve and inadequate planning.
Obi noted that petrol, which sold for under ₦1,000 per litre weeks ago, had risen to over ₦1,200 per litre, while diesel prices increased from below ₦1,000 to above ₦1,500 per litre. He attributed the hikes to tensions involving Iran and their impact on global oil prices.
He explained, “Most countries, whether oil-producing or not, maintain strategic petroleum reserves to cushion against supply or price shocks. When there is a disruption in the global oil market, they can release part of these reserves to stabilise supply. Nigeria lacks such a buffer, so the impact is felt almost immediately.”
Obi added that the situation reflected poor planning, saying, “Countries that engage in planning create buffers against shocks, while those that do not remain vulnerable. The old maxim remains true: when a country fails to plan, it has already planned to fail.”
In response, Olusegun dismissed Obi’s position, stating that the recent rise in fuel prices was primarily due to the deregulation of the fuel market following the removal of subsidies by the Tinubu administration.
“The recent increase in fuel prices in Nigeria is not mainly because the country lacks a strategic petroleum reserve. The more immediate factor is that the fuel market is now largely deregulated after subsidy removal,” he said.
He explained that in a deregulated system, petrol prices respond directly to global oil prices, exchange rates, shipping costs, and supply risks. “So when geopolitical tensions involving Iran push global oil prices higher, countries that rely heavily on imported refined products, like Nigeria, inevitably feel the effect at the pump. That is how an open market functions,” he added.
Olusegun also challenged Obi’s portrayal of strategic petroleum reserves, noting that they are typically used only during major supply disruptions.
“It is inaccurate to suggest that strategic petroleum reserves control everyday pump prices. Even countries with large reserves, such as the United States and China, maintain them primarily for serious supply emergencies, wars, embargoes, or major global supply disruptions,” he said.
Acknowledging Nigeria’s structural energy challenges, Olusegun pointed out that the country’s reliance on imported refined petroleum and foreign exchange pressures make it vulnerable to global market fluctuations.
“Nigeria’s real challenge has long been structural. Despite being a major crude oil producer, the country struggles with limited refining capacity and a heavy dependence on imported refined products. This structural imbalance, combined with exchange rate pressures, consistently exposes Nigeria to global price movements,” he said.
Olusegun further criticised Obi for oversimplifying a complex economic issue, adding, “When a former governor reduces a multi-layered global energy issue to a simplistic talking point, it is frankly embarrassing. He should know better.”
He also reminded Obi that he had publicly supported fuel subsidy removal during the 2023 presidential campaign. “The policy framework now allowing prices to reflect market realities is one you publicly endorsed,” Olusegun said.
Finally, he urged Obi to exercise caution when commenting on national economic matters. “Sometimes the wiser choice is to sit out a conversation rather than make uninformed statements that malign Nigeria,” he added.
