Footage from the Associated Press showed smoke rising from the embassy shortly after the strike, and images circulating online captured dust and smoke billowing above the compound. The Baghdad embassy is one of the largest U.S. diplomatic facilities worldwide.

The embassy has not yet released an official statement on the incident. In the past, the compound has been targeted by rockets and drones linked to Iran-aligned militias.

On Friday, the U.S. Embassy renewed its Level Four security alert for Iraq, warning American citizens of heightened risks. The alert noted that Iran and affiliated militias have previously targeted U.S. citizens, infrastructure, and interests, and “may continue to target them.”

This incident follows the recent crash of a U.S. military refuelling plane in western Iraq on March 12, which killed four crew members. The U.S. Central Command reported the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker went down around 2 p.m. Eastern Time during regional operations.
