He said the choice was guided by a commitment to uphold the rule of law and prevent unnecessary tension in the country. According to him, rejecting the bill could have sparked political disputes and unrest.

Tinubu made the remarks on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja during a meeting with All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council. He discussed the challenges of governance and the realities of politics in a democratic system.

The president noted that the Electoral Act passed with overwhelming backing from lawmakers, making it difficult for him to oppose it. He emphasized that had he had serious doubts about the bill, he would have raised them, but the broad support signaled its legitimacy.

Highlighting his adherence to democratic principles, Tinubu said signing the bill was a move consistent with the rule of law and the values of democracy, adding that once approved, the law became part of Nigeria’s political history.

He stated, “I had no choice. I didn’t want to plunge the country into arguments. There was an overwhelming majority in the National Assembly that passed the law. If I had serious questions or reservations, I would have raised them. But I submitted myself to the principle of the rule of law and democracy. I signed, and the rest is history.”
