Federico Valverde stole the show, scoring a sensational hat-trick in just 22 minutes to leave Pep Guardiola’s side facing an uphill battle ahead of next week’s second leg in England.

Despite missing key players like Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Rodrygo, Madrid struck first in the 20th minute. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois launched a long clearance that caught the City defence off guard. Valverde raced through, rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma, and calmly finished to put the hosts ahead.

Seven minutes later, Valverde doubled the lead after a precise pass from Vinícius Júnior, slotting the ball past Donnarumma. He completed his hat-trick just before half-time with the goal of the night, flicking Brahim Díaz’s pass over defender Marc Guéhi and volleying into the net.

Madrid had the chance to extend their advantage in the second half when Vinícius won a penalty, but Donnarumma denied the Brazilian from the spot.

City struggled to respond, with striker Erling Haaland kept quiet by Madrid defenders Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen, as the hosts secured a valuable clean sheet.

Meanwhile, in Paris, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Chelsea 5-2 in the first leg of their last-16 tie at the Parc des Princes. Bradley Barcola opened the scoring, Chelsea equalised through Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernández, but PSG regained control with Vitinha and late strikes from substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, giving them a commanding lead ahead of the return leg in London.

Bodø/Glimt also strengthened their quarter-final hopes with a 3-0 win over Sporting CP at the Aspmyra Stadion. Sondre Brunstad Fet scored from the penalty spot, Ole Didrik Blomberg added a second before halftime, and Kasper Høgh sealed the victory in the 71st minute.

In Germany, Arsenal F.C. salvaged a late 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen at the BayArena. Robert Andrich gave Leverkusen the lead shortly after halftime, but Kai Havertz converted a late penalty after substitute Noni Madueke was fouled, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.

The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.

When Akpan sought the court’s permission to adopt his client’s processes, Justice Abdulmalik informed him that the documents had already been deemed adopted.

The judge subsequently adjourned the matter until December 2, 2026, when judgment is expected to be delivered.
