Anthony Albanese confirmed on Tuesday that Australia had granted humanitarian visas to five Iranian players over safety concerns. Sources familiar with the situation later disclosed that two additional members of the delegation—a player and a staff member—have also applied for asylum, bringing the total number to seven.

The remaining members of the team have already left Australia and are travelling back to Iran, although details about their route and arrival time have not been made public.

Reports indicate that Australia initially approved asylum for five players who feared returning home after they remained silent during the national anthem before their Asian Cup match.

The team had been participating in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup hosted in Australia.

Iranian state television reportedly criticised the players, describing them as “wartime traitors” after they refused to sing the national anthem ahead of their opening match, which ended in a 3–0 defeat to South Korea women’s national football team. A presenter on the broadcaster warned that such actions should carry serious consequences.

The players stood in silence as Iran’s anthem was played before the game, a gesture that quickly drew strong reactions from Iranian media. One state broadcaster described the act as a major dishonour and suggested the players should face punishment during a time of national conflict.

The controversy comes as tensions intensify in Iran following airstrikes by the United States and Israel that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.

The split within the squad highlights the difficult choices facing the players. Those who returned to Iran may face questioning or punishment from authorities over the anthem protest, while those seeking asylum must begin uncertain new lives abroad, potentially leaving behind their families and football careers in their home country.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.

He wrote, “Chiemeka Chibuzor’s wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding pending further directive from me.”
