Sources revealed that the terrorists overran the base, forcing troops to withdraw before setting several military vehicles on fire and looting ammunition from the facility.

The attack reportedly took place in Kukuwa town on Sunday, where militants linked to the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram carried out a coordinated assault on the military formation.

Providing an update on Monday afternoon, a source confirmed that Lieutenant Colonel Farouq was among those killed during the attack.

“The commanding officer here, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, and some of his troops have been confirmed dead already. It is very sad,” the source said.

The development comes less than 72 hours after another senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel SI Iliyasu, was killed by Boko Haram insurgents.

Iliyasu, who served as the Commanding Officer of the 222 Battalion, lost his life alongside some of his soldiers during an attack in Konduga, Borno State.

In recent months, insurgents have intensified attacks targeting military personnel across the North-East.

Last Thursday night between 10 pm and 3 am on Friday, terrorists launched coordinated assaults on four military bases located in Konduga, Mainok, Jakana, and Marte towns in Borno State.

During the attacks, the gunmen reportedly fired heavily at the military facilities, resulting in casualties.

The attackers also operated in multiple groups, setting armoured tanks and military vehicles ablaze while carting away large quantities of ammunition.

However, a military source disclosed that troops also neutralised several Boko Haram fighters while repelling the attacks.

“Several attacks on military bases under Operation Hadin Kai were carried out by gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists in Konduga, Mainok and Jakana around 10:30 pm, while another attack occurred in Marte town around 3:00 am on Friday,” the source said.

“One of the locations is along Bama and close to Maiduguri — the base in Konduga — while Mainok and Jakana are both along the Maiduguri–Damaturu road.

“Marte town, where another base was attacked, is located after Dikwa Local Government Area, close to the Chad border.

“During the clashes, many Boko Haram fighters, including some of their commanders, were killed. I do not have the exact number of soldiers who died, but the terrorists managed to occupy some of the bases for hours without air support from the Nigerian Air Force,” the source added.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
