Wike vs Makinde: Appeal Court To Deliver Verdict On PDP Dispute Today.

Published

Rival factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have expressed optimism ahead of the Court of Appeal Nigeria’s ruling on the party’s protracted leadership crisis.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Both the camp aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and the group backed by several PDP governors maintained that legal precedents and statutory provisions support their claims.

The appellate court is set to deliver judgment on Monday on a series of consolidated cases concerning the party’s leadership.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki-led National Working Committee, Ini Ememobong, confirmed that the appeal court had scheduled the consolidated suits for judgment. Similarly, the spokesperson for Wike’s caretaker committee, Jungudo Mohammed, stated that the appellate court sitting in Abuja would decide the dispute.

In separate interviews, both sides expressed confidence that the ruling would favour them.

The crisis erupted after the November 15, 2025 convention in Ibadan, which produced Tanimu Turaki and other members of the National Working Committee for a four-year term. The convention, endorsed by PDP governors including Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, facilitated the leadership transition from former acting chairman Umar Damagum to Turaki before Damagum’s tenure ended on December 9.

However, a rival faction loyal to Wike formed a 13-member caretaker committee on December 8, appointing Mohammed Abdulrahman as acting national chairman and Samuel Anyanwu as acting national secretary with a 60-day mandate.

Attempts by both factions to hold meetings at the PDP national secretariat in Wadata Plaza, Abuja, on November 18, 2025, descended into chaos and physical clashes. Following the incident, the Nigeria Police Force sealed the party secretariat, which has remained closed since.

Both factions sought recognition from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), but the commission declined to recognise either camp, prompting prolonged legal battles.

Among the consolidated suits before the appellate court is FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, which previously halted the PDP convention pending compliance with the party constitution, the Nigerian Constitution, and the Electoral Act. The suit was filed by three PDP members: Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Abraham Nnanna, and Turnah Alabh George.

Another case was filed by former governor Sule Lamido, in which Justice Peter Lifu restrained INEC from supervising any PDP convention that excluded him as a contestant. Additional cases, including one from the Oyo State High Court, challenge the legality of the Ibadan convention.

Speaking on the expected judgment, Mohammed said Supreme Court precedents support the caretaker committee’s position. “The provisions of the law and the precedents already established by the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeal give us strong confidence that the judgment will be in our favour,” he said, arguing that the convention violated provisions of the Electoral Act, the Nigerian Constitution, and the PDP constitution.

In response, Ememobong said the Turaki-led National Working Committee has confidence in the judiciary and believes the court will uphold justice. “Our optimism lies in the fact that we submitted ourselves to the jurisdiction of the courts and we believe in the judiciary in its complete sense,” he said, adding that the law supports their position and expressing hope that the ruling would strengthen Nigeria’s democracy.

Meanwhile, the PDP Governors’ Forum, chaired by Governor Bala Mohammed, urged party members to remain calm ahead of the judgment. In a statement issued by its Director-General, Dr Emmanuel Agbo, the forum reaffirmed the party’s commitment to respecting the judicial process, noting that the judiciary is a critical institution in safeguarding democracy and calling on members to remain peaceful before, during, and after the ruling.

Earlier, Lagos PDP governorship aspirant Funso Doherty wrote to the President of the Court of Appeal, urging an expedited ruling. In a letter dated March 5, 2026, Doherty warned that uncertainty over the party’s leadership could affect preparations for the 2027 general election. He noted that INEC scheduled party primaries to begin on April 23, 2026, stressing that an early judgment would provide clarity for the party and stakeholders. According to him, the outcome of the appeal will be crucial in shaping the PDP’s internal processes and determining the legitimacy of candidates for the next election cycle.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
