Jose Mourinho Reveals Why He Was Sent Off During Benfica vs Porto Match.

Tempers flared late in the Portuguese league clash after Benfica came back from a two-goal deficit. Substitute Leandro Barreiro scored in the 88th minute to equalize, triggering celebrations on the touchline and chaos between both benches.
Shortly afterward, Mourinho was shown a red card. The Benfica manager said the referee claimed he had kicked the ball toward the Porto bench—a charge Mourinho strongly denied.
“The referee said he sent me off because I kicked a ball towards the Porto bench, which is completely false,” Mourinho said after the match.
“Many times after goals I kick the ball into the stands to give it to a fan and celebrate. I know I’m not very good technically, but it was meant for the stands.”
The incident also involved a heated exchange with Porto assistant coach Lucho Gonzalez, who was also dismissed. Mourinho later revealed that Gonzalez confronted him in the tunnel, repeatedly calling him a “traitor.”
“He called me a traitor 50 times in the tunnel,” Mourinho said.
“I’d like him to explain to me—a traitor to what? I went to Porto and gave my soul to the club. Then I worked at Chelsea, Inter Milan, and Real Madrid, giving my all. That is professionalism.
“Insults from fans are one thing, but a fellow professional calling me a traitor? Why? A traitor to giving everything to Benfica? I didn’t like it.”
Mourinho has a deep history with Porto, having won six trophies during his 2002–2004 spell, including the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup.
He returned to Benfica last September after leaving Fenerbahce, taking charge of the club where his managerial career first began in 2000.
