UN Report Reveals Women Globally Hold Just 64% Of Men’s Legal Rights.
A new United Nations (UN) report reveals that women worldwide still have significantly fewer legal rights than men, a disparity highlighted on International Women’s Day.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Titled Ensuring and Strengthening Access to Justice for All Women and Girls, the report found that, globally, women hold just 64% of the legal rights available to men. This inequality leaves millions of women and girls vulnerable to discrimination, violence, and exclusion.
“The reality is stark. In over half of the world’s countries, rape laws are not based on consent,” the report states.
Key findings include:
-
Nearly three-quarters of nations legally allow child marriage, depriving girls of education and childhood.
-
44% of countries lack laws guaranteeing equal pay for work of equal value.
-
Around 54% of countries do not define rape based on consent.
The report also highlights persistent legal barriers, with women often facing restrictions in owning property, initiating divorce, passing citizenship to children, or working and moving freely without their husband’s approval.
Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, warned that denying women justice weakens society as a whole. “Public trust erodes, institutions lose legitimacy, and the rule of law itself is undermined. A justice system that fails half the population cannot claim to uphold justice,” she said.
The UN acknowledged some progress: approximately 87% of countries now have laws against domestic violence, and more than 40 nations have strengthened constitutional protections for women over the past decade. However, the report stressed that legal reforms alone do not guarantee justice. Stigma, fear, financial barriers, and lack of trust in institutions continue to block access for many women.
Emerging challenges also threaten women’s rights. Some previously secured rights are being rolled back, while new threats, including online abuse, are increasing. Access to justice is particularly limited for the 676 million women and girls living within 50 kilometres of active conflict zones, where rape remains a weapon of war, with cases of sexual violence rising 87% in just two years.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized that advancing women’s rights is essential to building fairer societies. “Women’s rights are human rights, and investing in women and girls is one of the surest ways to make the world a better place,” he said.
Guterres called on governments and organizations to turn legal rights into real protections. “When women are not equal under the law, equality does not truly exist. Ensuring justice for all women and girls is critical for stronger, fairer societies. Now is the time to act,” he said, urging greater support for UN Women and global women’s movements.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
