Lassa Fever Crisis: FMC Jalingo Struggles Amid Rising Death Toll.

Between November 2025 and March 2026, the hospital recorded 42 deaths from the virus, highlighting the worsening health crisis in Taraba State.

As the largest tertiary healthcare facility in the state, FMC Jalingo is struggling under a shortage of medical doctors, forcing healthcare workers to operate under extreme pressure while the epidemic continues to claim lives.

Dr. Abubakar Kirim described the situation as a rapidly escalating epidemic, noting, “Lassa Fever is surging, and if not properly managed, it is claiming lives on a daily basis.”

According to Dr. Kirim, 230 suspected cases were reported over the five-month period, with 102 confirmed. Of those, 95 patients were admitted, and 30 successfully recovered and were discharged.

The battle against the virus is complicated by patients leaving treatment centers due to delays in testing. “When we run short of reagents, samples are sent to Bauchi or Edo for confirmation. During this waiting period, some patients become frustrated and leave, putting themselves and others at risk,” he explained.

Tragically, the virus has also affected hospital staff. Three health workers—a doctor, a nurse, and a driver—contracted Lassa Fever. One doctor and the driver died, while the nurse survived. Dr. Kirim emphasized, “Our health workers are risking their lives to save others. The shortage of doctors makes our work even more challenging.”

The hospital is urgently calling for more qualified doctors to strengthen its response. “We need additional doctors to help tackle this epidemic effectively,” he urged.

Dr. Kirim also stressed the importance of public awareness and called on stakeholders—from ward officials and local government authorities to the state Ministry of Health—to coordinate massive awareness campaigns. “The epidemic is rising daily, and only a coordinated response can save lives,” he said.

Residents of Jalingo have been advised to take precautions: avoid contact with rodents, maintain strict hygiene, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms such as fever, headaches, or bleeding occur, as these are common indicators of Lassa Fever.

As FMC Jalingo continues to operate under immense pressure, the crisis underscores both the fragility of healthcare systems during epidemics and the courage of frontline workers racing against time to save lives.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.

The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.

Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.

He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.

Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.

Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.

In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
