Fagbemi: OPL 245 Dispute Resolution Will Reposition Nigeria’s Economy.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has stated that resolving the long-running dispute over OPL 245 will help reposition Nigeria’s economy and strengthen the country’s fiscal capacity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Fagbemi also commended the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that his direction made the breakthrough possible.

Speaking in Abuja after the signing of the legal agreement that brought the dispute to an end, the Attorney-General described the development as a major step toward improving Nigeria’s economic outlook.

According to him, the agreement represents a significant turning point for the nation’s oil and gas sector after more than two decades of legal disputes and international arbitration.

The Federal Government reached the settlement with Eni and Nigerian Agip Exploration Limited (NAEL), bringing the prolonged dispute over the oil block to a close.

Fagbemi explained that resolving the OPL 245 matter would help stabilise the national economy and strengthen the Federal Government’s financial position. He added that at the beginning of the administration, President Tinubu had directed that all disputes surrounding the oil block be resolved amicably in the best interest of Nigerians.

He noted that the President’s clear vision and commitment provided the political will required to conclude the long-standing dispute, adding that the agreement reflects Nigeria’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law.

The Attorney-General further explained that the settlement, which will lead to a Consent Arbitral Award, not only settles a complicated international dispute but also restores Nigeria’s reputation as a reliable partner in global business.

He pointed out that the resolution would eliminate legal and fiscal uncertainties that previously delayed the development of the oil block. According to him, this is expected to attract major investments, create jobs, and reinforce Nigeria’s standing as one of Africa’s leading energy producers.

Fagbemi also said the anticipated revenue from the asset could now be factored into the country’s medium-term fiscal framework, helping to improve budget stability, support long-term economic planning, and ensure debt sustainability.

He added that settling the matter through negotiations rather than prolonged arbitration demonstrates Nigeria’s commitment to alternative dispute resolution and strengthens the country’s credibility in international commercial and arbitration circles.

The Attorney-General further commended institutions and stakeholders that played key roles in resolving the dispute, including the Ministry of Petroleum Resources, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, as well as international partners such as Eni and Shell.

He stressed that the agreement highlights the importance of dialogue over conflict and prioritising national interest above other considerations.

“With this agreement, Nigeria can now move forward with confidence, ensuring that the development of OPL 245 becomes a source of prosperity for the nation and future generations,” Fagbemi said.
