He made the call during the Ramadan Special Iftar organised by the Ogun State Government at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, under the theme, “An Islamic Path to Societal Re-orientation”, over the weekend.
Governor Abiodun encouraged Muslims to support the poor, uplift the vulnerable, and show kindness to those around them, noting that communities thrive when citizens care for one another.
He described Ramadan as more than a religious observance, calling it a sacred period that fosters discipline, compassion, and strong moral character.
The governor also commended Muslim clerics for their continued guidance, which he said strengthens the spiritual and moral foundations of society. He highlighted their role in promoting peace, stability, and socio-economic harmony.
“Your insights remind us that societal renewal begins with the renewal of our values, character, and commitment to justice, compassion, and integrity. We are confident the ideas shared today will guide our collective efforts toward building a principled and responsible society,” he said.
Abiodun described the theme of the lecture as timely, citing global moral and social challenges that require renewed commitment to ethical values. He highlighted issues such as dishonesty, intolerance, erosion of family values, and declining civic responsibility as areas requiring collective reflection and action.
He stressed the critical role religious leaders play in shaping societal values through sermons, teachings, and guidance, nurturing the moral consciousness of communities.
“I commend our Imams and Islamic scholars for their efforts in promoting peace, tolerance, and unity. Ogun State has long been a model of religious harmony, where Muslims, Christians, and people of other faiths coexist peacefully,” he said.
Governor Abiodun also acknowledged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership, noting that the president’s life exemplifies faith, compassion, and service to humanity. He praised Tinubu’s commitment to justice, inclusiveness, and national responsibility as an inspiration for Nigerians, guiding the nation toward stability, growth, and shared prosperity.
The governor further emphasised that Ramadan goes beyond abstaining from food and drink, describing it as a time for spiritual purification, self-discipline, and charity. He stressed that governance should extend beyond infrastructure and economic growth to prioritise citizens’ welfare.
He explained that his administration’s Building Our Future Together agenda reflects this principle, focusing on social welfare, youth empowerment, economic growth, and inclusive development.
Delivering a lecture titled “An Islamic Path to Societal Re-orientation,” Professor Is-haq Oloyede lamented that many parents have been neglecting their responsibilities, outsourcing parenting to others.
He warned that some Nigerian universities are becoming “asylums” due to a lack of discipline and moral guidance at home. Oloyede urged Nigerians to speak out against behaviours that contradict cultural values, especially respect for elders.
He concluded that rebuilding the nation’s educational culture, investing in education, strengthening family ties, and ensuring good governance are crucial steps toward societal re-orientation.
